Sciatica Treatments
Sciatica is the term used to describe a set of symptoms caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. This nerve runs from the roots of the spinal cord in our lower back, down to the buttock area, along the back of our leg to our foot.
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica can come on gradually over time, but it can also be triggered by very small, everyday movements – like bending over to one side to pick something up – or from sudden traumas or incidents, like falling off a ladder and landing on your back. The condition usually affects just one side of the buttocks and leg and you may or may not experience back pain as part of sciatica.
Other back issues can mimic sciatica so it is important to receive a correct diagnosis from a trained physiotherapist. Most importantly, though, sciatica is a very treatable condition with appropriate management.
